Borderlands 4’s SHiFT explained: crossplay, friends and matchmaking
Gearbox has detailed how SHiFT underpins online play in Borderlands 4, the looter shooter set on Kairos. The account system ties together matchmaking, crossplay, friends lists, and reward redemption across platforms. The studio’s guidance focuses on practical setup – creating an account, linking platforms, configuring party privacy – and clarifies how playlists and difficulty scaling work in co-op. There are also notes on handling age-entry mistakes and where to seek support if something breaks.
What SHiFT is and what it does

SHiFT is a free account system integrated into Borderlands 4 and previous Borderlands titles. It powers online matchmaking and crossplay, and it is the mechanism for redeeming SHiFT codes – time-limited tokens that grant in-game rewards such as Golden Keys. Each SHiFT code can be redeemed once per SHiFT account, and Golden Keys provide a path to rare loot within the game.
Account setup and platform linking
Players can create a SHiFT account using an email address or a first-party platform account on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, or Epic Games. After signing in, platform accounts used to play Borderlands 4 can be linked from the Gaming Platforms section of the SHiFT profile. If an age is entered incorrectly during signup, the guidance is to reach out to 2K Support to correct the account.
Building a squad and managing crossplay
Party creation starts in the game’s Session Settings with Party Privacy options. Available choices include Friends Only, Invite Only, Public, and Local Only. SHiFT enables searching and managing a cross-platform friends list, while friends from the first-party platform account can be invited directly.
- To add cross-platform friends, use their full SHiFT display name in the Friends tab of the in-game SHiFT menu.
- To add platform friends not listed, search their first-party username from the party panel in the main menu.
The Personal Crossplay toggle determines whether players from other platforms can join your party. If any member of the party disables Personal Crossplay, crossplay is turned off for the entire party for that session. The Session Settings menu also lets each player set an individualized Difficulty that scales appropriately per player without altering the experience for co-op partners.
Matchmaking playlists and progression rules
Matchmaking can be started from the main menu or via the party panel. Once queued, players can choose specific playlists, with the game placing them into relevant content based on progression. Not every option is available immediately – some require finishing the campaign and unlocking additional ranks.
- Campaign missions near your current progression level
- Ultimate Vault Hunter mode
- Moxxi’s Big Encore Runs
- Weekly Wildcard missions

Ultimate Vault Hunter mode, Moxxi’s Big Encore Runs, and Weekly Wildcard missions become available only after completing the campaign and unlocking Ultimate Vault Hunter ranks. After selecting a playlist, start matchmaking to be placed into a game with your party.
Twitch Drops integration (optional)
SHiFT can be linked to a Twitch account to enable Drops rewards tied to eligible streams. Linking is handled from the SHiFT profile under Gaming Platforms, and rewards are delivered in-game once Borderlands 4 is launched and connected to the same SHiFT account. Active Drops campaigns and redemption details are listed on the Borderlands 4 Twitch Drops page.
Support and troubleshooting
For SHiFT-related issues, 2K Support provides a Borderlands 4 help portal and direct assistance. Including the SHiFT Support ID from the SHiFT profile can speed up troubleshooting. Account-related corrections – such as an incorrectly entered age – are also handled by support.
Why this matters – a smoother path to co-op
Borderlands 4 leans on SHiFT for the fundamentals of online play, from crossplay party building to progress-aware matchmaking and reward claims. Getting your SHiFT account linked and your Session Settings set the way you like means less friction and more time doing what matters on Kairos – looting, shooting, and tackling playlists with friends.
