Obsidian has released The Toxic Tangle, the first major content drop for Grounded 2. The update introduces a sprawling Garden biome, new enemies, gear, and a corruption-like Tang effect that permeates Brookhollow Park. Players can now ride a Ladybug Buggy with utility-focused combat tools, while combat and building systems get significant refinements. The studio also outlined what is next: Playgrounds Mode enters Public Test Beta in February.

What the Update Adds at a Glance

The Toxic Tangle is positioned as a broad expansion of exploration, combat, and building. Below are the headline additions confirmed by the studio:

  • New Garden biome with vertical routes, dense vegetation, and hidden spaces.
  • Rideable Ladybug Buggy featuring a pressurized water cannon, ramming charge, and health regeneration.
  • Tang effect – a spreading contamination that stains soil, seeps into water, and affects creatures.
  • New creatures: Earwigs, Potato Beetles, and the Woolly Aphid, plus returning threats and a Snake Colossus encounter.
  • Mutation overhaul splitting perks into active and passive types with passives tied to weapon loadout.
  • Builder upgrades: Pumpkin Set, refreshed Mushroom Kit, Scale Roof Set, updated Acorn Stairs, and floor hatches.
  • Garden MIX.R and O.R.C. wave challenges available now.

Garden Biome – Vertical Routes and Hidden Spaces

The new area centers on an overgrown greenhouse where massive vines create layered platforms, shortcuts, and crawlspaces. From a pumpkin patch to denser “carrot jungle” sections, the zone emphasizes climbing and line-of-sight breaks that can conceal threats. The layout is designed for discovery and mobility, with secret stashes and vertical traversal playing a larger role.

Ladybug Buggy – a Utility-Focused Mount

One of the series’ signature insects becomes a rideable, tank-style mount. The Ladybug Buggy is outfitted with a pressurized water cannon that can knock airborne pests out of the sky and rinse Tang buildup. It also executes a frontal ramming charge and slowly regenerates health, giving squads a mobile platform for crowd control and hazard management.

New Creatures and Encounters

The Garden adds coordinated Earwigs and heavier Potato Beetles alongside the Woolly Aphid, each bringing new attack patterns and timing challenges. Narrative threads continue as the Masked Stranger reappears, while a towering Snake Colossus looms as a landmark-scale threat. These additions tie into the Tang contamination, which alters spaces and enemy behavior.

Combat and Building Systems Updated

Mutations now separate into active and passive categories. Actives behave as before, while passives apply automatically based on weapon loadout, cutting down on menu swaps mid-fight. Builders gain new options with the Pumpkin Set, a refreshed Mushroom Kit, the Scale Roof Set, updated Acorn Stairs, and long-requested floor hatches to align set parity and snapping consistency.

Challenges and Mode Roadmap

The update enables Garden MIX.R and O.R.C. wave challenges for players seeking defense and survival trials. Looking ahead, Playgrounds Mode will enter Public Test Beta in February with core creation tools from the first Grounded, supporting custom minigames, arenas, and gauntlets. The studio also points to an updated roadmap for future Grounded 2 content.

Availability and Release State

The Toxic Tangle update is available now. Grounded 2 remains in Game Preview on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud, and in early access on Steam. The developer notes that feature testing for Playgrounds will proceed via the February PTB.

Why It Matters

The Toxic Tangle pushes Grounded 2 toward larger, more vertical spaces and deeper buildcraft while simplifying combat prep with passive mutations. For players, that means broader traversal, clearer loadout payoffs, and new defensive scenarios to master ahead of the Playgrounds PTB.
