Hangar 13 has released the Free Ride Update for Mafia: The Old Country. The patch introduces a dedicated Free Ride mode that replaces the legacy Explore mode, adds new race and combat challenges, and expands systems across the campaign. It also brings first‑person driving to the series for the first time, a robust Photo Mode, the stylistic Cinema Siciliano presentation, and a returning Classic Difficulty. The update is available now for all players.

Associate Design Director Josh Zammit framed the intent behind the refresh:

Mafia: The Old Country Free Ride Update features new challenges, items, and modes for players to explore

“Free Ride has always been close to our hearts,” said Josh Zammit of Hangar 13. “It lets us spend more time in the world and, more importantly, find new ways to have fun.”

Free Ride lets you roam Valle Dorata at your own pace, detached from the campaign narrative. Challenges unlock in step with your main story chapter progress – you can swap between campaign and Free Ride from the pause or main menus, or finish the story first and jump in with a full slate of starting tasks.

Each challenge has three reward tiers that grant Dinari, the in‑game currency earned via play, with additional store items becoming available as you clear sequences of challenges. Expect hidden secrets scattered across the map; following clues to the end yields high‑value rewards.

New features beyond Free Ride

The patch adds several cross‑mode systems that apply to both Free Ride and the main campaign.

  • First‑Person Driving – Series‑first cockpit view with detailed interiors and close‑up character animations for more immersive driving and racing.
  • Photo Mode – Pause, frame, and share scenic or action shots. Tools include camera FOV, focal distance/aperture, brightness/contrast/saturation, tilt, filter suite (such as Cinema Siciliano, Cinema Siciliano Sepia, High Contrast, Soft Glow, Analog, Split Tone, 35mm Film), intensity controls, vignette, film grain/scratch, and toggles to show the player character, other characters, or a grid.
  • Cinema Siciliano Mode – A stylistic presentation that evokes early Italian cinema with black‑and‑white visuals, vintage‑style audio, Sicilian VO enabled by default, and a cleaner contextual UI. Photo Mode includes matching filters for consistent shots.
  • Classic Difficulty – A tougher ruleset inspired by the original Mafia and Mafia: Definitive Edition: deadlier enemies, limited health regeneration, and lost unspent bullets on reload across campaign and Free Ride.
  • Sundial weather presets – Change the atmosphere while exploring via interactable sundials in the Vineyard and Enzo’s apartment: Sunrise, Afternoon, Foggy, or Ashfall.

Developer perspective

Zammit also addressed the high‑challenge option returning to the series:

“We definitely don’t pull our punches in this mode,” he said about Classic Difficulty, noting it’s designed for players seeking higher stakes and a demanding skill check.

Why this update matters

The Free Ride Update broadens Mafia: The Old Country with replayable activities and series‑first systems that deepen exploration, driving, and self‑expression. For returning players, Classic Difficulty and the challenge ladder offer a tougher endgame; for new players, first‑person driving and Photo Mode provide more ways to experience Sicily’s landscapes. Dive in, experiment with the new settings, and chart your route through Valle Dorata.
