Nintendo has rolled out a substantial update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons alongside a platform-specific upgrade for Nintendo Switch 2. The free 3.0 update refreshes island life with new activities, quality-of-life tweaks, and collaboration items. Separately, Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds hardware-driven improvements and expanded online play. The rollout is available now, dated January 15, 2026, according to the company’s official announcement.

The update splits into two tracks: features that arrive for all players on Nintendo Switch, and enhancements exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition (with an upgrade option for existing owners). Here is what changes on each side.

Free 3.0 update – what’s new on every island

The base game receives new activities and convenience boosts designed to pull you back into daily play without upending your existing setup. The key additions focus on creative tasks and faster island management.

  • Kapp’n’s family hotel – A new hotel appears by the dock. Players can design themed rooms for visiting guests; completing hotel rooms (or helping Tom Nook with certain DIY requests) grants hotel tickets that can be exchanged in a souvenir shop for new items.
  • Major storage expansion – Home storage can be upgraded two more times for a maximum of 9000 slots. You can now store trees, shrubs, and flowers, easing big landscaping projects.
  • Resetti’s cleanup service – If your island got messy, Resetti can tidy selected areas or the entire island. He can also clear flowers and custom designs and send them directly to your storage.
  • New collaborations – Expect LEGO items, retro Nintendo-themed knickknacks, and extras unlocked by scanning select amiibo devices, including those from the Splatoon and The Legend of Zelda series.

How to update: From the HOME Menu, highlight the game, press the + button, and select Software Update (internet connection required).

Slumber Islands – safe spaces to experiment

Players with a Nintendo Switch Online membership can spin up up to three Slumber Islands that are separate from the main island. These dreamlike sandboxes are made for experimentation without consequences.

  • Build boldly – Terraform, construct, and decorate using items you have previously obtained, all without touching your primary island’s layout.
  • Co-create with friends – Host friends on your Slumber Island or visit theirs to work together on designs and builds online.

Switch 2 Edition – hardware-driven enhancements

The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition layers in features that leverage the newer system and broaden multiplayer options. Existing owners of the original game can access these additions via an upgrade pack.

  • Enhanced resolution – Visuals get a lift on Switch 2 hardware.
  • Mouse control support – Faster, more precise decorating through mouse input.
  • Megaphone for villager calls – Use the system’s built-in microphone to call animal residents with a dedicated megaphone feature.
  • Expanded online play – If all participants own the Switch 2 Edition, islands can host 12-player online sessions.
  • CameraPlay + GameChat – See and hear friends’ reactions in real time during multiplayer sessions.

Online requirements: Nintendo Switch Online is required for most online features. GameChat can be used without a Nintendo Switch Online membership until March 31, 2026; after that date, a membership is required.

Availability and official note

The free 3.0 update and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition enhancements are live as of January 15, 2026. Owners of the original game can enable the Switch 2 features via an upgrade pack on the new system.

“We hope you enjoy the new update.” — Nintendo

Island Takeaway – why this matters now

Whether you’re returning after a break or still logging in daily, the 3.0 patch adds fresh creative loops and time-saving tools, while Switch 2 features raise the ceiling for cozy co-op sessions. It’s a low-risk reason to revisit your town – and a safer space to test bold ideas before you bring them home.
