New Nintendo Switch Online 7-day trial and Switch 2 extras
Nintendo has reopened access to a 7-day free trial of the Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership. The company says accounts that previously tried the service can now start a new trial – with a cap of one redemption per account after 1/12/2026. The trial includes online play and a library of classic titles, alongside app features. Separately, Nintendo Switch 2 users gain GameChat support, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons is set to receive a Slumber Island update on Jan. 15.
What’s included in the renewed 7-day trial
During the trial, players can use core Nintendo Switch Online features without charge for seven days. That covers:
- Online multiplayer in supported games (Nintendo highlighted examples such as Mario Kart World).
- Access to 150+ classic titles across Super NES, Game Boy, and NES collections.
- Use of the Nintendo Music smart-device app.
Note that the trial cannot be redeemed for the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack tier. Nintendo also clarifies that not all benefits shown in the trailer apply to the free trial.
Switch 2: GameChat and timing details
On Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo’s GameChat lets players converse while playing together – a notable addition for party and co-op sessions. Nintendo lists titles such as Kirby Air Riders and Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV to underscore online social play.
There is a defined window for GameChat availability: until March 31, 2026, GameChat is available in an open-access period that does not require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. After this date, a membership will be required.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Slumber Island update
A new update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduces Slumber Island, where players can build and decorate with friends and family. Nintendo lists availability as Jan. 15.
Expansion Pack adds more platforms and content
For players comparing tiers, Nintendo outlines additional content in the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack (the free 7-day trial does not apply to this tier):
- Game libraries: access to Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and SEGA Genesis collections.
- DLC access: content for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Splatoon 2.
- Exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2: a collection of Nintendo GameCube games.
- Exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack are included at no additional cost within the Expansion Pack.
