Redsec is live: Battlefield’s first free-to-play Battle Royale
Redsec launches today as Battlefield’s first-ever free-to-play Battle Royale, according to the official announcement. The release is more than a single mode – it also includes Gauntlet, a round-based elimination multiplayer experience, and Portal Community Creations, an evolving sandbox built by community developers. For newcomers, a dedicated Battle Royale Initiation playlist offers a smaller map and lower-pressure matchmaking. The update centers on class-driven play, fast redeploys, and objective-driven challenges across multiple modes.
Battle Royale Initiation – a lower-stakes on-ramp for new players
The Initiation playlist is aimed at newer players and uses BR Duos on a condensed version of Fort Lyndon. Access is limited to new players, the map is significantly smaller than the full release, and there’s a 48-player maximum that includes bots. The focus is on learning the flow of Battle Royale without the full-scale intensity.

- Team setup: Duos, with one player labeled Squad Leader who triggers the jump for both teammates.
- Drop mechanics: Stay in formation for safer landings or break off at any time; parachutes auto-deploy near ground or can be deployed manually.
- Class choice: Assault (frontline pressure), Engineer (vehicle/equipment specialist), Support (healing, resupply, fortification), Recon (intel, long-range, disruption). Players also select a Sidearm as a backup weapon.
Looting, ammo, and armor – how you gear up
Progress hinges on scavenging. Look for rectangular crates: green (Common), red-and-black (Rare), and red with Class symbols (Class Chests). Vehicles may contain items, and there are locked vaults with higher-value gear. Ammo is shared across weapons within the same category. While you can loot defeated enemies or call in an Ammo Resupply, the simplest restock comes from the Support class’s Supply Box.

Objectives, circle pressure, and respawns
Your primary goal is straightforward – eliminate all opponents. Optional Contracts appear on the full-map screen and reward powerful items; you’ll see prompts beneath the compass when contracts become available. The shrinking hazard is the Circle of Death – red-shaded zones on the mini-map and HUD warnings mark its edge, and stepping inside can down and eliminate you rapidly.
Elimination is not always final. During the opening minutes, every player has a Second Chance that redeploys them immediately from the sky. If unused, it converts into a notable amount of XP toward ranks and Loadout unlocks. Teammates can also use Respawn Points found on the map – activate one and stay within its radius to bring back all dead allies, with spectators able to request a respawn. The match ends when one squad remains.

Starter tips for BR survival
Battlefield’s blog highlights a few principles tailored to Initiation:
- Stick to Initiation zones – learning the local layouts can give you an edge over other new players.
- Know your class – use the full kit and, if possible, learn basics from more experienced teammates.
- Work with your team – share intel and resources, stay close, and revive when it’s safe.

Gauntlet – round-based elimination across rotating operations
Gauntlet pits eight squads of four against each other in a sequence of special operations. Squads bring custom loadouts and compete to earn points from mode-specific objectives. An in-game briefing before each operation outlines how to play and how points are scored. Fail to meet the threshold and your squad is eliminated; win four modes in the Gauntlet to take the match.
- Watch the briefing – each operation tutorial shows core actions and scoring.
- Play the objective – prioritize actions that generate the most points for your squad.
- Communicate – use pings and chat to coordinate, or risk early reassignment.

Portal Community Creations – community-led sandbox
Alongside Battle Royale and Gauntlet, Redsec features Portal Community Creations – an ongoing sandbox curated from community developers’ works. The mode mix is designed to evolve over time, broadening Redsec beyond its core competitive offerings.

Final takeaway – a wider Battlefield sandbox under one free banner
Redsec consolidates a free-to-play Battle Royale, an objective-first Gauntlet, and evolving community-made content into one package. For players, that means a gentler onboarding via Initiation, class-driven squad tactics, and an alternative competitive path in Gauntlet – all built to be approachable yet scalable as skills grow.
